Lenovo also recommends configuring supervisor and user passwords in BIOS.
Preparing the Security Chip Before Recovery or Repair
The security chip should be initialized before computer recovery, operating system reinstallation, or certain reset operations.
When Windows BitLocker drive encryption is enabled, it must first be disabled according to the documented procedure before initializing the security chip.

Protecting Data on the Solid-State Drive
The Lenovo LaVie Z stores data on an internal SSD.
Files may contain private information, account details, and other sensitive data.
Deleting Data Before Selling or Disposing of the Computer
Moving files to the Recycle Bin, deleting files, formatting the SSD, or restoring the factory software does not necessarily make the previous data unrecoverable.
These operations may change how the data is referenced without physically erasing every stored record.
For disposal, resale, or transfer, Lenovo recommends using a suitable data-erasure service or dedicated software.
Lenovo identifies the Drive Erase Utility for Resetting the Cryptographic Key and Erasing the Solid State Drive as a tool for supported storage devices.
The software is available through Lenovo Support.
When a supported encrypted SSD is installed, cryptographic-key erasure can make data encrypted under the old key unreadable without that key.
Windows 8.1 Recovery Instructions
The Lenovo LaVie Z includes Windows 8.1 recovery functions that can refresh Windows, restore factory settings, or repair startup problems.
A recovery image is stored in the computer’s recovery partition.

- Connect the prepared USB drive.
- Select Next.
- Click Create.
- Follow the on-screen instructions until the process finishes.
After creating the recovery USB drive, Windows may offer the option to keep or delete the internal recovery partition.
Keeping the internal recovery partition preserves another recovery option.
If the partition is deleted, the USB recovery drive must be stored securely because it may be needed to refresh or reset the computer.
Recovering Windows Using USB
- Connect the computer to AC power.
- Insert the recovery USB drive.
- Turn on the computer.
- Enter the BIOS Setup Utility.
- Open the Boot submenu.
- Set the recovery USB drive as the first startup device.

2. How do I reset the Lenovo LaVie Z to factory settings?
In Windows 8.1, open Settings > Change PC settings > Update and recovery > Recovery. Enable wireless functions, turn off airplane mode, and click the network icon in the Windows notification area. Select the required Wi-Fi network and enter the credentials if prompted.
