  15. The breadmaker must not be operated outdoors or for commercial purposes.
  16. The appliance must not be placed near a hot gas burner, electric burner, or heated oven.
  17. The breadmaker must only be used for its intended household purpose.

Hot Surface and Steam Safety

The baking chamber, bread pan, and finished bread become extremely hot during operation.

  • Oven mitts or pot holders must be used when removing the bread pan.
  • The machine must not be handled unnecessarily while operating.
  • The lid must not be opened during baking.
  • The face must be kept away from the lid when opening the breadmaker after baking.
  • Hot steam must be allowed to escape safely.

Warning: The breadmaker becomes very hot during use. Contact with heated surfaces or escaping steam can cause burns.

Moving Parts Safety

The kneading blade moves during the mixing and kneading stages.

Hands and utensils must be kept clear of moving components.

Electrical Safety

The appliance uses a polarized electrical plug with one blade wider than the other.

The plug is designed to fit a polarized outlet in only one direction.

If the plug does not fit:

  1. Remove it from the outlet.
  2. Reverse its orientation.
  3. Attempt to insert it again.
  4. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician.

The plug must not be modified.

An outlet must not be used if the plug fits loosely or the outlet becomes warm.

Extension Cord Safety

The breadmaker has a short power cord to reduce the risk of entanglement and tripping.

If an extension cord is used, it must be arranged so that it does not hang over a table or countertop where children could pull it or someone could trip over it.

Electrical Circuit Requirements

The manufacturer recommends operating the breadmaker on a separate electrical circuit from other operating appliances.

An overloaded electrical circuit may prevent the breadmaker from functioning properly.

Disconnecting the Breadmaker

To disconnect the appliance:

  1. Switch the breadmaker off.
  2. Grasp the electrical plug.
  3. Remove the plug from the wall outlet.

The cord itself must never be pulled.

Before First Use

The breadmaker must be positioned correctly, and the removable bread pan and kneading blade must be prepared before making the first loaf.

Step 1: Position the Breadmaker

Place the breadmaker on a suitable countertop within reach of an electrical outlet.

The machine must remain unplugged during initial preparation.

Make sure there is enough clearance above the appliance for the top lid to open without striking overhead cabinets.

Step 2: Remove the Bread Pan

  1. Open the top lid.
  2. Locate the bread pan handle.
  3. Grasp the handle.
  4. Pull the pan straight upward to remove it.

Step 3: Clean the Bread Pan

Wash the removable bread pan using gentle, non-abrasive soap.

Rinse it thoroughly and dry it completely.

Step 4: Install the Kneading Blade

  1. Locate the kneading blade in its protective wrapping attached to the power cord.
  2. Remove the packaging.
  3. Position the blade over the drive shaft inside the bread pan.
  4. Fit the blade securely onto the shaft.

Step 5: Prepare the Ingredients

Measure the ingredients required for the selected recipe.

The manufacturer’s instructions recommend starting with fresh flour and yeast.

The bread pan should remain outside the breadmaker while the ingredients are being added.

Measuring Ingredients Correctly

Accurate ingredient measurements are essential for producing properly risen and baked bread.

Measuring Liquid Ingredients

Liquid ingredients must be measured using a suitable measuring cup with clearly marked cup or ounce measurements.

  1. Pour the liquid into the measuring cup.
  2. Place the measuring cup on a flat surface.
  3. Check the measurement at eye level.
  4. Confirm that the required quantity has been measured.

Measuring Dry Ingredients

Dry ingredients must be measured carefully and leveled.

  1. Use a spoon to place the ingredient into the measuring cup.
  2. Fill the cup to the required level.
  3. Remove excess ingredient using the back of a knife or a spatula.

The measuring cup must not be used to scoop flour directly from its container because doing so can compress the flour and result in excess flour being added.

Correct Ingredient Order

Ingredients must be placed into the bread pan in the following order:

  1. Liquid ingredients first
  2. Dry ingredients second
  3. Yeast last

The yeast must not come into direct contact with liquid while ingredients are being added.

A small well should be formed in the flour, and the yeast should be placed inside it.

Ingredient Temperature

Unless a recipe specifies otherwise, the manufacturer’s introductory instructions recommend ingredients at approximately 77–85°F.

Recipes with different temperature requirements must follow their specified values.

For Expressbake recipes, the water must be heated to 115–125°F and measured using a cooking thermometer.

How to Use the Oster CKSTBRTW20 Breadmaker

The following steps describe the general procedure for making bread using the automatic baking programs.

Step 1: Install the Kneading Blade

Make sure the kneading blade is securely attached to the shaft inside the bread pan.

Step 2: Add the Ingredients

Follow the selected recipe carefully.

Add liquids first, followed by the dry ingredients, with yeast added last.

The yeast must remain separate from the liquids during ingredient loading.

Step 3: Install the Bread Pan

  1. Carefully lower the filled bread pan into the breadmaker.
  2. Snap it into its operating position.
  3. Check that the pan is correctly seated.
  4. Close the lid.

Step 4: Connect Electrical Power

Insert the power cord into the wall outlet.

The machine will beep, and the LCD will illuminate.

The default display will show:

MENU 1 TIMER 3:25

This indicates the Basic bread program with a default duration of 3 hours and 25 minutes.

Step 5: Select the Baking Program

Press Menu Select repeatedly until the required program number appears.

The program must match the recipe being prepared.

Step 6: Select the Crust Color

Use the Crust Color button to select the preferred setting, where supported.

For the manufacturer’s traditional white bread recipe, Medium is recommended.

Step 7: Select the Loaf Size

Press Loaf Size until the required loaf size is indicated on the display.

Supported selections are 1 lb., 1.5 lb., or 2 lb., depending on the program.

Step 8: Set the Delay Timer if Required

For programs that support delayed baking, use the timer arrow buttons to select when the finished bread should be ready.

The delay time includes the entire baking cycle.

Step 9: Start the Program

Press Start/Stop.

The breadmaker begins mixing the ingredients and continues through the selected kneading, rising, and baking stages automatically.

Important: Start/Stop must not be pressed unnecessarily during the breadmaking cycle. Doing so stops the program and requires the process to be started again.

Step 10: Allow Baking to Finish

The LCD counts down the remaining time.

At the end of a regular bread cycle:

  1. The display reaches 0:00.
  2. The breadmaker sounds 15 beeps.
  3. The appliance enters Keep Warm mode.
  4. The 0:00 display flashes.

Step 11: Remove the Finished Bread

The manufacturer recommends removing the finished bread promptly rather than leaving it in the bread pan.

  1. Use oven mitts to grasp the bread pan handle.
  2. Lift the pan straight upward.
  3. Turn the pan upside down over a cooling rack.
  4. Gently shake until the bread releases.
  5. If necessary, use a rubber spatula to loosen the edges.
  6. If the kneading blade remains in the loaf, use the supplied blade removal tool to remove it.

Metal spatulas must not be used because they can damage the nonstick surface.

Step 12: Cool the Bread

Allow the finished loaf to cool for approximately 15 minutes before slicing.

Step 13: Prepare for Another Loaf

Before starting another normal baking cycle, allow the breadmaker to cool for approximately 10–15 minutes with the lid open and the bread pan removed.

For consecutive Expressbake cycles, the manufacturer specifies a 20-minute cooling period with the lid open.

Breadmaker Programs and Settings

The Oster CKSTBRTW20 includes 12 preset programs.

The duration depends on the selected program and, for applicable settings, the loaf size.

Expressbake Instructions: How to Make Bread in 58 Minutes

The Expressbake function is designed to prepare bread in less than one hour.

It operates differently from the standard bread programs and requires specific ingredients and preparation conditions.

Important Expressbake Requirements

RequirementInstruction

Why Expressbake Bread Is Different

Expressbake bread tends to have:

  • A darker crust
  • A thicker crust
  • A shorter loaf height
  • A denser texture
  • Occasional cracks across the top of the crust

These characteristics result from the higher-temperature, shorter-duration baking process.

Yeast Requirements

Fast-rising yeast must be used.

Regular active dry yeast is not recommended for Expressbake because the finished loaf may be considerably shorter.

Water Temperature Requirements

The water must be between 115°F and 125°F.

A cooking thermometer must be used to measure the water temperature accurately.

Water that is too hot can kill the yeast, while cooler water may not activate it adequately.

Other Ingredient Requirements

All other ingredients, including flour, sugar, butter, and dry milk, should be at room temperature.

The correct salt quantity must be used.

The manufacturer recommends following its Expressbake recipe quantities for consistent results.

How to Start an Expressbake Cycle

  1. Install the kneading blade in the bread pan.
  2. Measure the required water at 115–125°F.
  3. Add the water and remaining liquid ingredients.
  4. Add the dry ingredients, excluding yeast.
  5. Make a small well in the flour.
  6. Add the fast-rising yeast to the well.
  7. Snap the bread pan into the machine.
  8. Close the lid.

How to Use the 13-Hour Delay Timer

The Delay Timer allows bread to finish at a selected future time.

The timer can be adjusted for up to 13 hours, including the selected baking program.

Important Delay Timer Restrictions

The manufacturer recommends using recipes that have already produced successful results.

The Delay Timer must not be used with:

  • Expressbake programs
  • Recipes containing perishable ingredients such as eggs or milk

The delay timer includes both the waiting period and the breadmaking program duration.

Example of Delay Timer Calculation

If the current time is 8:00 AM and bread is required at 6:00 PM, the total time between those points is 10 hours.

The delay timer must be set to 10:00.

For a 2 lb. Basic loaf:

How to Cancel the Delay Timer

If an incorrect time has been entered:

  1. Press and hold Start/Stop until a beep is heard.
  2. Press Start/Stop once more.
  3. The display will return to the original program and cycle time.
  4. Enter the required settings again.

Delay Timer Use in Hot Weather

The manufacturer provides the following adjustments for delayed baking during hot weather:

  • Reduce the recipe liquid by 1–2 tablespoons if necessary.
  • Reduce the salt quantity by ⅛–¼ teaspoon when appropriate.
  • Reduce the sugar quantity gradually, approximately ¼ teaspoon at a time.

These adjustments are intended to help prevent dough from rising excessively during delayed operation.

Breadmaking Tips and Best Practices

Use Fresh Ingredients

The manufacturer recommends fresh flour and yeast.

Old flour may have absorbed moisture or become excessively dry during storage.

Old yeast may not activate properly, resulting in bread that does not rise sufficiently.

How to Check Yeast Freshness

The manufacturer provides a simple yeast test.

  1. Fill a cup with warm water.
  2. Add 2 teaspoons of sugar and stir.
  3. Sprinkle a few teaspoons of yeast over the water.
  4. Allow the mixture to stand for approximately 15 minutes.

Fresh yeast should produce foam and a noticeable yeast aroma.

If neither develops, the yeast should be discarded.

Check the Dough During Kneading

The manufacturer recommends checking the dough’s consistency during the second kneading cycle.

A properly mixed dough ball should appear smooth and rounded and move around the bread pan without excessive sticking.

Dough Is Too Wet

If the dough looks sticky or resembles pancake batter:

  1. Sprinkle in a tablespoon of flour.
  2. Allow it to mix.
  3. Check the consistency.
  4. Repeat with small additions until the dough forms a smooth, rounded ball.

Dough Is Too Dry

If the dough looks flaky or the breadmaker begins making knocking sounds:

  1. Add one teaspoon of water.
  2. Allow the dough to mix.
  3. Check its consistency.
  4. Repeat carefully until a smooth, rounded dough ball forms.

Too much additional water must be avoided.

Baking at High Altitudes

The manufacturer provides adjustments for locations above approximately 3,000 feet.

At higher altitudes, dough can rise more quickly and flour may become drier.

ConditionRecommended Adjustment
Dough is too dryIncrease water, sometimes by 2–4 tablespoons per cup.
Bread rises too muchReduce yeast by approximately ⅛–¼ teaspoon for each teaspoon used.
Bread rises too muchReduce sugar by approximately 1–2 teaspoons for each tablespoon used.

Adjustments should be made gradually while checking the results.

Cleaning Restrictions

The manufacturer prohibits the following:

  • Immersing the breadmaker in water or other liquids.
  • Placing the breadmaker in a dishwasher.
  • Using benzene or chemical cleaning products.
  • Using abrasive scrubbing brushes.
  • Using metal utensils on the nonstick bread pan.
  • Bending the heating element inside the appliance.

Cleaning the Bread Pan

  1. Remove the cooled bread pan from the breadmaker.
  2. Wipe the pan using a damp cloth.
  3. Remove any remaining food residue.
  4. Dry the bread pan completely before storage or reuse.

The bread pan must not be placed in a dishwasher because dishwasher cleaning can damage its finish.

Cleaning the Kneading Blade

  1. Remove the kneading blade from the bread pan.
  2. Wipe the blade using a damp cloth.
  3. Remove any remaining dough residue.
  4. Dry it thoroughly.

The kneading blade must not be washed in a dishwasher.

How to Remove a Stuck Kneading Blade

If the kneading blade is difficult to remove:

  1. Make sure the bread pan has cooled.
  2. Add warm water to the bread pan.
  3. Allow the blade to soak for approximately 10–15 minutes.
  4. Remove the loosened blade carefully.
  5. Clean and dry the parts.

Bread Pan Discoloration

The bread pan may change color after repeated use.

The manufacturer explains that this can occur because of steam and moisture.

The color change does not affect the breadmaker’s performance.

Cleaning the Heating Chamber

Loose bread crumbs may be wiped away with a slightly damp cloth.

The heating element inside the breadmaker must not be bent.

The main appliance must never be submerged in water or any other liquid.

Storage Instructions

How to Store the Breadmaker

  6. Close the breadmaker lid.
  7. Store the appliance without placing heavy objects on the lid.

How to Store Homemade Bread

Homemade bread prepared using the breadmaker does not contain the preservatives found in many commercially prepared breads.

The manufacturer recommends:

  1. Allow the loaf to cool.
  2. Place it in a lightly sealed plastic bag.
  3. Store it outside the refrigerator.

A stalk of celery may be placed in the bag to help keep the bread fresh longer.

The manufacturer advises against refrigeration because it can cause bread to dry out more quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I use the Oster CKSTBRTW20 Breadmaker?

The kneading blade must first be installed in the removable bread pan. Recipe ingredients are added with liquids first, dry ingredients second, and yeast last. After the pan is secured and the lid closed, the required program, loaf size, and crust color are selected. Pressing Start/Stop begins the automatic breadmaking cycle. When baking finishes, the breadmaker sounds 15 beeps and enters Keep Warm mode.

2. How many baking programs does the Oster CKSTBRTW20 have?

The breadmaker has 12 programs: Basic, French, Whole Wheat, Sweet, Expressbake 1.5 lb., Expressbake 2 lb., Quick, European, Dough, Bagel Dough, Jam, and Bake. Program durations range from approximately 58 minutes for Expressbake to 3 hours and 35 minutes for the standard 2 lb. French cycle.

3. How do I use Expressbake to make bread in 58 minutes?

Select Menu 5 for a 1.5 lb. loaf or Menu 6 for a 2 lb. loaf. Expressbake recipes require fast-rising yeast, bread flour, and water heated to 115–125°F. Ingredients must be loaded in the specified order, and the lid must remain closed throughout the cycle. The Delay Timer and Crust Color adjustments cannot be used with Expressbake.

4. How do I set the 13-hour delay timer on the Oster Breadmaker?

The ingredients must be loaded, and a compatible baking program selected. The Delay Timer Up or Down buttons are then used to select the total time until the bread should be finished. The timer adjusts in 10-minute increments and includes the baking cycle itself. Pressing Start/Stop activates the timer, and the colon on the LCD flashes. Expressbake programs and recipes containing perishable ingredients such as eggs or milk must not be used with the delay timer.

5. What do E00, E01, EEE, and HHH mean on the Oster Breadmaker?

E00 and E01 indicate that the internal baking chamber temperature is outside the permitted range, either above 136°F or below −4°F. The appliance should be allowed to return to room temperature before another attempt. EEE indicates a broken temperature sensor circuit, while HHH indicates a bypassed temperature sensor circuit. These sensor problems require authorized service.

6. Why does the Oster Breadmaker display 0:00 and keep beeping?

When a normal breadmaking cycle finishes, the display reaches 0:00 and the machine sounds 15 beeps. The appliance then enters Keep Warm mode, and the 0:00 display flashes. The warming function operates for up to one hour, after which another 15 beeps sound. Start/Stop may be pressed to cancel Keep Warm.

7. How do I remove and clean the kneading blade?

The breadmaker and bread pan must be allowed to cool. The kneading blade can then be removed from the pan and wiped using a damp cloth before being dried thoroughly. If it becomes stuck, warm water may be placed in the bread pan for 10–15 minutes to loosen it. The kneading blade and bread pan must not be cleaned in a dishwasher.

8. Why is my bread not rising properly in the Oster CKSTBRTW20?

Poor rising can result from old yeast, unsuitable flour, incorrect ingredient measurements, or missing ingredients. The manufacturer recommends using fresh flour and yeast and adding ingredients in the correct order. For ordinary recipes, liquids are added first, dry ingredients second, and yeast last. If the loaf rises too little, the recipe may require a small reduction in flour or an increase in yeast, with adjustments made gradually.
