Frequently Asked Questions
1. What batteries can the Schumacher SP1298 charge?
The Schumacher SP1298 is designed for compatible 12V lead-acid and 12V lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) rechargeable batteries with a recommended capacity of 22–59Ah. The correct battery chemistry must be selected using the Battery Type button before charging.
2. How many amps does the Schumacher SP1298 provide?
The SP1298 provides a rated charging output of 6A at 12V DC. It operates from a grounded 120V AC electrical outlet.
3. How do I select lithium or lead-acid mode on the Schumacher SP1298?
Use the Battery Type button to select the battery chemistry. The manual identifies one button press for lead-acid and two for lithium-ion when selecting from the initial prompt. The display confirms the selection and provides a message indicating how to switch to the other type. The charger remembers the selected battery type.
4. What does a flashing green light mean on the Schumacher SP1298?
A flashing green LED indicates that charging has been aborted. The digital display shows CHARGE ABORTED-BAD BATTERY. Possible causes include a sulfated battery, an oversized battery, or a battery that remains below 10V after two hours of charging. The battery should be checked according to the troubleshooting instructions.
5. What does a pulsing green light mean on the Schumacher SP1298?
A pulsing green LED means the connected battery is fully charged and the charger has entered automatic maintain mode. The display shows FULLY CHARGED AUTO MAINTAINING. The charger monitors the battery and supplies charging current when necessary to keep it charged.
6. Can the Schumacher SP1298 stay connected to a battery for long-term maintenance?
Yes. The SP1298 includes automatic maintain mode, which allows a healthy 12V battery to remain charged over an extended period. The manufacturer recommends checking the battery and charging process occasionally because battery problems, improper connections, or excessive electrical loads can affect operation.
7. Why does the Schumacher SP1298 display CONNECT CLAMPS?
The CONNECT CLAMPS message indicates that the charger is not detecting a proper battery connection. Check the battery clamps, battery terminals, and chassis connections. If the ring terminal quick-connect is being used, a defective in-line fuse may also cause this message.
8. Can the Schumacher SP1298 charge a battery through a vehicle’s 12V accessory outlet?
Yes. The SP1298 includes a 12V accessory plug quick-connect for charging or maintaining a compatible battery through the vehicle’s accessory outlet. The outlet must permit charging current to pass through it. If the ignition key must be turned on to activate the outlet, the key may be turned without starting the engine, as described in the vehicle owner’s manual.
